Shards: Part 1

by Alexandria

The story is called Shards. This is the first part of a four part story. I think its PG. The whole Bastion story line seemed like a great one at first. It started out great and Jubilee got to be on her own. However, it ended far too quickly for my taste and with out much happening. This is an alternative ending to it. What if things didn't happen the way that they were shown to us. More importantly, what if they weren't over? Disclaimer: none of this belongs to me, I make not money from this, trust me.

One more thing < > indicates a flash back or dreams, okay? Don't worry you'll understand it later.

<Jubilee fought her broken body as she struggled to sit up. Strong hands pushed her to the floor again. Jubilee choked back a strangled cry of pain and frustration. She rested her forehead against the cold floor that was sticky and slippery with her blood. Her hands jerked uncontrollably at the strain of holding herself up. Beside herself a raspy grunt escaped her. Jubilee rolled over onto her back and her midsection screamed in protest.>

Jubilee's eyes fluttered open and her eyes tried to make out the man towering above her. Slowly her eyes caught his form in the dark. All around her she heard cries and screams of the others that were beyond the walls in thier own similar hell. She felt the slight pressure of one of his boots as it rested on her stomach. Jubilee's breathing sped up and it shook her whole body. The man pressed down his foot and her breathing was cut short. He pressed harder as he moved his foot up over her rib cage.

"Tell me." He whispered so low Jubilee had to wonder if she even heard it. She tried to shake her head and it made little jerking movements. The man pressed even harder and she felt unbelievable pain. Then she heard the rest of her ribs break. "Tell me." He said a bit louder. Jubilee turned her head to the side as she began to be sick. The man let her up and she quickly turned over. Her self preservation and the rest of her humanity ignored the pain as she made the hurried movement. Jubilee rested on the back of her arms as she retched uncontrollably.

The reaction was a painful one as every part of her body shook. She felt each shattered rib as her chest heaved. Her throat burned and her mouth was so badly bruised she could hardly open it. Jubilee also knew it was a costly reaction. She had not ate voluntarily since she had got here and the guards had to pin her down to force her to eat. However, that happened only a few times. They just wanted her alive for the time being, they didn't want her healthy. She didn't know how much longer she could take it. Jubile wiped her mouth and moved away collapsing on the floor. The man crouched down and placed his hands on her shoulders.

"You will tell me what I need to know sooner or later Ms. Lee." Bastion told her. "You have no other choice.">

Jubilee bolted up in bed and she looked around unsure where she was. Even after three months of being out of Bastioin's grasp waking up was always confusing. After a few moments she remembered she was at the X mansion for a few months on summer vacation. She was in her old room. Jubilee let out a shaky breath and put her hand over her heart. She felt it hammer against her chest. She breathed deep as she fought the terror that was rising in her. Jubilee stared at the ceiling waiting for the fear to ebb. She slowly got out of bed and grabbed her robe. She threw it over her nightgown and glanced at the clock, it was a little after midnight.

Jubilee walked out of her room and down the hall. She had forgotten how quiet it was here. At the school there was always something going on. The small girl walked down the stairs and moved towards the med lab. She waited by the door listening for Hank. After a moment of silence she opened the door and crept in.

The med lab was dark and sterile. <Jubilee twisted and thrashed against the strong hands that held her. She screamed a wordless howl of rage as she fought. The guards dragged her in the brightly lit room. She was blinded at the light after so much time in the dark. She was overwhelmed by the strong odor of chemicals there. She screamed again as they forced her onto the operating table.> Jubilee went over to the cabinet and looked through it. She found what she was looking for easily in the back. She took out a small bottle of clear liquid and placed it on the table. She reached in the pocket of her robe and took out an empty vile. It was made of glass and was about two inches long. She took off the rubber stopper and filled it with the liquid. She put the vile in her pocket and placed the bottle where she had found it. Jubilee scanned the room again then left as silently as she had come.

The next morning Jubilee woke up late and she jumped out of bed. Gathering up her things she ran for the bathroom for her shower. A few moments later she stepped out of the steamy shower and quickly dried off. Jubilee got ready and walked into the hallway brushing her damp hair. She made her way to the danger room for some training when a voice called out to her.

"Morning Jubilee." Marrow's raspy voice called to her. Jubilee paused and turned to find the odd looking girl behind her. Beside herself Jubilee's stomach turned at the sight of the Morloch.

"Morning Marrow. How are you?" Jubilee asked politely. She knew it was pointless. Marrow simply did not like her, no matter what she said. Marrow had gone out of her way to bait and taunt her since Jubilee arrived. Jubilee was beginning to get a little sick of it.

Marrow walked up to Jubilee and she automatically fell into an easy stance. "Think you can fight me?" Marrow laughed.

"I know I can." Jubilee said honestly. "But your an X-MEN and X-MEN don't fight one another." Jubilee told her.

Marrow laughed again. "Did your old one "teach" you that little one? What else did he teach you?" Marrow asked low.

Jubilee blinked in surprise. "Excuse me? What did you just say?" Jubilee demanded. Marrow stood about an inch from her face now.

"You heard me girl." Marrow whispered geting closer still.

"I thought so." Jubilee growled. "You want a fight, you just got one."

Marrow smiled and launched herself at Jubilee. Jubilee nimbly twisted out of the way and gave Marrow a strong kick to her back as she went. Marrow quickly collected herself and rounded towards Jubilee again. Jubilee blasted her and it sent Marrow into the wall. Jubilee smiled and walked up to her as she pushed herself off the wall. Jubilee balled up her fist and punched her conecting with her chin. Marrow struck out and caught Jubilee in the stomach.

Marrow got away from the wall and hit Jubilee again. Jubilee hit back again connecting with her face. Jubilee ducked as Marrow kicked out. Marrow went over her and Jubilee shot up. She reached out and grabbed one of the bones that protruded from her. With a violent jerk Jubilee yanked it free of Marrow's body. Marrow cried out in pain and whirled on Jubilee.

Jubilee smiled wickedly at Marrow as she held a spike of bone in her hand. "Loose something?" She asked innocently. Marrow screeched in rage. "You are going to learn one way or another Morloch to leave me be." Jubilee hissed low. Marrow launched herself at Jubilee again and Jubilee readied herself.

Sam grabbed Marrow's shoulders and held her back. Jubilee looked over to Sam who struggled with Marrow. Then she saw a *very* mad Cyclops coming over with Warren and Logan. Marrow was squalling like a wild cat.

"What is going on?" Cyclops demanded. He didn't get a responce from either girls.

"I am going to get you girl." Marrow hissed.

Jubilee laughed. "Go ahead and try." She challenged. Marrow fought even harder in Sam's grasp. Cyclops looked between the two. Jubilee still held Marrow's bone and he took it from her. "It was in self defence." She told him as she saw him looking at her.

"I want to know what happened." Cyclops bellowed.

"Looks like the two get in a fight." Logan told him. Cyclops glared at him. Marrow let off a string of curses and Jubilee looked her way. She broke free of Sam and swatted Jubilee. Jubilee hit her with the palm of her hand on her cheek then raked her long nails over her cheek and down her neak in a fluid movement. Cyclops grabbed Jubilee and hauled her away from Marrow while Sam regained his grip.

"Take her out of here." Cyclops barked at Logan as he handed Jubilee over to him. Jubilee struggled a bit still wanting to tear Marrow apart. Logan hefted her over his shoulder and walked down the hall.

"This isn't over little one. Don't think your old one will save you." Marrow yelled after her.

"Your damn right it's not over. I'm going to nail your bony but to the wall." Jubilee yelled.

Logan walked outside with Jubilee still slung over his shoulder. He got to the gardens and put her on the ground. Jubilee took a few steps away from him and set down on the bench. Logan watched her with a mixture of concern and amusement. He had never seen Jubes like that. Her breathing was still fast and she had some blood on her, probably Marrow's. Jubilee ran a hand through her shoulder length hair to smooth it out and she smeared some blood on her forehead.

"So what happened back there?" Logan asked.

Jubilee sighed wearily. "She has been giving me grief since I got here. Just because she's pissed off at the world doesn't mean she can take it out on me." Jubilee said heatedly. "Anyway its not like you never lost it like that." Jubilee accused. Logan held up his hands in defence.

"I'm not mad at ya' darlin'. I just wanted to find out what happened." Logan told her sitting beside her. "It's not like you to give in to things like that." He said gruffly.

"Yeah, well even I have my limits." She told him quietly crossing her arms.

"What did she say that got you so mad?" He asked. Jubilee looked away and he saw her blush. She shrugged.

"I can't really remember. It happened so fast." Jubilee told him.

Logan frowned but let the subject drop. He looked over to the bood that was smeared on her forehead and raised a hand to her face. Jubilee who didn't notice what he was doing flinched when his fingers rested on her forehead. Logan tossed aside his hurt feelings and snorted. "What don't you trust me?" He half joked. Jubilee shot him a bemused look. Logan wiped the blood off her forehead and she looked off into the woods absently. He found himself assured as she relaxed when he removed the blood.

Logan looked down at the small girl on the bench and felt the familar tightening around his chest. She had just turned fourteen a couple of weeks ago and he was having a hard time accepting that she was that old. It seemed like just yesterday when she was a little girl who trotted right behind him as they drifted through China. God, she was growing up too fast. She was caught up in things she had no right being involved in. She deserved a normal happy life where the worst thing to happen to her was if a boy didn't ask her to the high school dance. Not to worry about dying or the whole world hating her for no reason. He lent back taking out a cigar slowly. There wasn't any point in thinking about that, there wasn't anything he could do about it.

He lit the cigar and looked around the garden not sure of what to say to her. It seemed like everything he said wasn't enough lately. He knew he wasn't around much and he was surprised she didn't bring the fact up. He glanced her way again and tried to think of something decent to say to her. He knew something was wrong with her and he was clueless at how to go about it. Maybe she would tell him when she was ready but he wasn't sure she would. Perhaps she doesn't know she can come to him anymore. He draped an arm over the back of the bench absently. He blinked in surprise when he felt Jubilee settle into it. Logan glanced her way and say her resting easily on his arm. His worn face turned into a slight smile. Maybe things aren't so bad after all, he thought.

Jubilee was in between being a child and being a woman. She was maturing but her small frame still made her look like a child. She was thinner than he remembered and her hair was longer than he had ever seen it. Her lustrous black hair fell down her shoulders in waves. Jubilee's blue eyes held whoever she gazed at but they were unreadable. Her lips were turned into a small frown. She wasn't dressed in her yellow jacket as she usually was. In fact in the two weeks she had been there he had yet to see her wear it. She was wearing a paid skirt that was a few inches above her knees. It was higher than he liked but he had seen all the teenage girls wear them like that. She had on a simple white dress shirt that was partly open showing a simple white under shirt.

When Sean had dropped Jubilee off he had told the X-MEN that she had been acting odd lately. Coupled with the fact that she had just gone off on Marrow so badly he was really worried. There were changes in her that he sensed. They were just faint hints of something that lurked beyond her exterior. Logan looked at Jubilee and his heart threatened to jump out of his chest. I don't think it's possible for me to love you any more than I already do, he thought.

Jubilee lent foreward suddenly and Logan turned as he felt the warmth on his arm fade. She stood up and looked his way. "Here I am all ready to kick some major but and I can't do anything about it. You want to go to the Danger Room with me? Don't worry I'l tell Cyke that you gave me a stern talking to." Jubilee told him as she made her way to the mansion.

Logan stood up and followed her. "Only if you promise to take it easy on me." Logan joked. Jubilee looked over her shoulder as she walked.

"Come on, your not that old." Jubilee shot back smiling.

"I'll show you old." Logan grinned as he playfully grabbed her arm. He picked her up and she shrieked. Logan put her down a few feet away and she hit him playfully on the arm. "I may be old." He paused when he saw Jubilee nod. "But I'm the best at what I do." He told her. Jubilee grabbed his cigar.

"Of course you are." She told him. She threw the cigar on the ground and stomped on it. "I thought you were going to quite those things." She told him ignoring his protests but quickened her pace none the less. "It was self defence, second hand smoke." She joked. "Come on "old one"." Jubilee mocked in Marrow's voice. Logan laughed and ran towards her. Jubilee laughed and ran towards the mansion.

"That's it girl, now you get it." He told her as he chased her into the mansion.
