"Where did they go, Clanmember Chang?"

"To Chinatown, presumably." Yukiko Chang turned, glaring at Viper. "Leave me, Viper."

"My Clanmaster may call you into the Blood Ring for that, Clanmember."

"For what?"

"Giving them your protection."

Her eyes hardened. "I would give my life for Remy LeBeau, Viper. And Miss Lee has committed no crime. She seeks only answers. She deserves those answers."

Viper studied the woman, a touch of melancholy colouring his features. He had sought to become her lover, before she had declared she would pursue her mother・s path. "Tread carefully, Yukiko," he said softly, touching her hair lightly. "Miss Lee has been slated for execution."

"She would be executed for her parents・ crimes." Yukiko looked at him. "That is why I chose my mother・s path, Seng. The White Dragon does not punish a child for the crimes of the parents."

He gave her a small and rueful smile. "The Dragons are stagnating, Yukiko. New leadership is needed."

"Those are treasonous thoughts, Seng," she said coldly.

"Perhaps. Or perhaps they are honest thoughts." With that, he disappeared.

Remy stared out the window as Jubilee drove. He hadn・t been sure why Yukiko had given him the tape, but now he knew. It was her subtle way of saying goodbye. Permanently.

"You okay, Gumbo?"

"Non, p・tite," he whispered softly. "But I will be."
